Designer Ned Wenlock founded Onedo -an animation and motion graphic studio. Ned Spoke of his experience in the design industry and obstacles and opportunities that came his way linking back to the theme of ART VS CRAFT.
The apache video that Ned created for free got him exposure, therefore landing new clients that were interested in the same thing. By the time he finished 2 other jobs that had the same effect he also got very bored of repeating himself. The clients wanted exactly the same thing but ned explained that it was difficult to create the same feeling. He explained that ART can be commercial but still have you own sense of style.
This conversation led to the do’s and don'ts of working for free.
DO: If you are interested in designing for someone approach them and make sure your getting exposure for yourself and they are too.
DON’T: A client will come to you and they want you to work on a commercial project in exchange for exposure. It also brings down the market e.g “if you did it for free for them why won’t you do it for us” “if he/she will do it for free why won’t you”.
“Its not worth doing things for free unless it's on your own terms”.
