week 3 lecture

There is no right answer. Find the possibilities!

"It is a not knowing, and openness to possibilities that are prerequisites"

Strategy 1: Divergent thinking = cornerstone to design

  • Diamond thinking
followed by Strategy 2: Convergent thinking. Critical thinking
OPEN THINKING -----> Refined idea
  • Double Diamond thinking
Strategy 1: Divergent thinking
Strategy 2: Convergent thinking x2
Strategy 3: Multiple Diamond thinking…ideas inspired by other ideas

Exercise
Plinth, weight, coconut cutter, foot stool

Trust, self awareness
Trust, not knowing

Suspend judgement, openness, play, risk taking

Strategy 4: Concept Blending

  • Difficult situations help us learn - sometimes the most
Suspend Judgement - create time is brainstorming where no critique is allowed (at first)
Openness - listening, are you open enough?
Play - often involves movement - can diffuse tension
Risk Taking

week 3: One Percent Collective talk

Lecture 29/8
One Percent Collective

- Use what inspires you to influence others
  • Despite coming from different disciplines, different skill sets often work hand in hand to inspire others and help everyone to think and approach things in new ways. People often assume they will be out of place when working with new people (when coming from different walks of life), however in many situations these different approaches help to create a better and more interesting work environment.
- You get funding through starting off working free

  • Motivation to get to where you want to be can be time consuming and free of charge. Through his dedication to gain exposure in the design world, he worked many hours pay free to start off his career as after university.

- Tell people who inspire you that you appreciate them

  • Think about who inspires you and tell them. Often we only acknowledge our appreciation for someone when we want something in return. Perhaps we should start expressing our interest in what inspires us just for the sake of it. Make someones day!

- 10 year old girl raises money through paintings

- Our creativity help us with non-design jobs (thinking process)

Week 3: Speaker Seies and Studio Time

Since there were two speakers, we discussed that at least one person from the group should be at the other design talk. Four of us went to the talk for Xero for Philip Fierlinger, Design entrepreneur. Xero co-founder, former Head of Design while Rachael went to the talk by Pat Shepherd from One Percent Collective. Each group were briefed by Karl and Anna about the strategic proposal plan (SPP).

When we regrouped we discussed each talk's highlights and interesting points. For Philip, it was about thinking outside the box and designing something that was years ahead of his time.

We also discussed some things from the client meeting. One thing they seemed to really want was packaging and a more prominent brand identity online. By the end of the lesson we decided that we should all come with a little bit of research or examples on what we individually want to work on for the SPP .

KiwiOptical Website

Mr Foureyes website is yet to become live so they can be visited on their old website; KiwiOptical
we found their point of difference to be their buy one give one and also they offer a reglazing service which is usually a hidden and costly service that eyewear companies have

Currently their buy one give one does not have its own page. Instead it is with the products and can be added to the cart as part of the customers purchase.

Group Photo

A lot of ideas were thrown around from sports illustrated style cover to ugly glasses groupshot. The group decided it would be fun to go with Spice Girls as it worked well with our whole "Specs Appeal" team image.

Week 2: Introduced to Creative Enterprise team

After the previous week where we chose which client we wanted to work for we were put into a group of five consisting of two industrial, two VCD and one fashion student. We briefly introduced ourselves and shared personal work ethics that we felt group members should know (e.g. introversion, time management etc.) As well as why we were interested in the client Mr. Four eyes.

We then read through and signed the group contract and agreed to meet up at least once a week before class. We then proceeded to think up ideas for a team name. In the end we decided to go with Specs Appeal and set up our twitter account.

twitter account: AppealSpecs

We met up with the four other groups for Mr. Four eyes and discussed setting up a client meeting on Tuesday. We also narrowed down the common questions each group had in their mind so that they wouldn't become overwhelmed by repetitive questions.
